Root Canal Treatment
Treatment of an infected or damaged tooth pulp so that the natural tooth can be retained where possible.
Overview
Root canal treatment (RCT) is carried out when the pulp inside a tooth — the tissue containing its nerves and blood vessels — becomes infected or damaged. The infected tissue is removed, the canals are cleaned and shaped, and they are then sealed.
The aim is to relieve infection and retain the natural tooth where that is clinically possible.
Save Your Natural Tooth
Root canal treatment is designed to rescue teeth that have been compromised by deep decay, infection, or trauma, rather than resorting to extraction. When the soft inner tissue of a tooth—known as the pulp—becomes inflamed or infected, it can cause persistent pain, sensitivity, or swelling if left untreated.
During the procedure, the infected or damaged pulp tissue is carefully removed, and the inner root canals are cleaned, disinfected, and shaped. The canals are then sealed to prevent further infection, and the tooth is typically restored with a filling or crown to rebuild its strength and protect it from future damage.
Why it matters
- Relieves pain and discomfort caused by infection or inflammation
- Preserves your natural tooth structure instead of requiring extraction
- Helps prevent the spread of infection to surrounding teeth and tissue
- Restores normal biting and chewing function once treatment is complete
Advances in modern instrumentation and imaging allow root canal treatment to be performed with greater precision and comfort than in the past.
Why root canal treatment may be needed
- Deep tooth decay reaching the pulp
- Infection inside the tooth
- Injury or trauma to a tooth
- Persistent tooth sensitivity
- Pain while chewing
After treatment
A tooth that has had root canal treatment is often restored with a crown or a suitable filling to protect it. Your dentist will advise what is appropriate for your tooth.
Mild tenderness for a few days after treatment is common. Any medication or instructions will be explained to you.
