Oral Surgery

Tooth extraction and wisdom tooth removal carried out under local anaesthesia.

Overview

Removal of a tooth is considered when it cannot be restored or when it is causing problems that cannot be resolved in another way. The procedure and aftercare are explained before treatment.

Wisdom Tooth Removal & Specialized Care for Complex Dental Problems

Wisdom teeth, the last set of molars to emerge, often develop without enough space in the mouth. As a result, they can become impacted, partially erupted, or angled in a way that makes them difficult to clean properly, increasing the risk of decay, infection, and gum problems in the surrounding area.

When wisdom teeth cause recurring pain, infection, damage to neighbouring teeth, or pressure-related discomfort, removal may be recommended. Oral surgical procedures are carefully planned following a detailed examination and appropriate imaging, with the surgical approach determined by the exact position and condition of the tooth.

Common reasons for removal

  • Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth causing pain or swelling
  • Recurrent infection or decay that is difficult to treat conservatively
  • Crowding or pressure affecting neighbouring teeth
  • Cysts or other complications identified during imaging

Pre-surgical imaging allows the position of the tooth and its roots to be assessed carefully before determining the most appropriate surgical approach.

Tooth extraction — when it may be required

  • A tooth that is too decayed to be restored
  • A tooth that is fractured beyond repair
  • Advanced gum disease affecting the support of a tooth
  • A retained tooth that is interfering with treatment

Extraction is carried out under local anaesthesia. You will be given written or verbal aftercare instructions covering bleeding, diet, cleaning and medication.

Wisdom tooth removal

  • Impaction — the tooth cannot erupt into a normal position
  • Pain around the wisdom tooth area
  • Repeated infection or swelling around a partly erupted tooth
  • Decay or gum problems affecting the wisdom tooth or its neighbour

Whether a wisdom tooth needs removal is assessed clinically and with radiographs. Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed.

Aftercare

  • Follow the instructions given for the first 24 hours
  • Take any prescribed medication as directed
  • Avoid disturbing the area while it heals
  • Contact the clinic if bleeding, pain or swelling increases
