Tooth decay and gum inflammation often begin without discomfort. By the time a tooth becomes painful, the problem is usually more advanced and the treatment needed is more involved.
A routine check-up is a short appointment in which the teeth, gums and soft tissues are examined. Radiographs are taken only where they are clinically needed.
What is usually looked at
- Early decay, including between the teeth
- The condition of existing fillings, crowns and bridges
- Gum health and the presence of hardened deposits
- Tooth wear and how the teeth meet
- The soft tissues of the mouth
How often
Many people are advised to attend around twice a year, but the interval that suits you depends on your own oral health, diet and cleaning. Your dentist will recommend a schedule after examining you.
