Root canal treatment is carried out when the pulp inside a tooth becomes infected or damaged, often because of deep decay or injury. The aim is to remove the infection and retain the natural tooth where that is possible.
The usual sequence
- Examination and radiographs to confirm the diagnosis
- Local anaesthesia so the area is numb
- Removal of the infected tissue from inside the tooth
- Cleaning and shaping of the canals
- Filling and sealing of the canals
- A final restoration, often a crown, to protect the tooth
Afterwards
Mild tenderness for a few days is common and usually settles. Any medicines and aftercare instructions will be explained to you at the appointment.
